Al Ahli Defends AFC Champions League Elite Title, Reaffirms Continental Dominance
Al Ahli has been crowned AFC Champions League Elite champions for the second year in a row after defeating Japan’s Machida Zelvia 1–0 in the final at Alinma Stadium in King Abdullah Sports City, Jeddah, reinforcing their dominance in Asian football.
The final was a tightly contested match, with both sides showing strong tactical discipline. The first half ended goalless, though Al Ahli looked slightly more composed, enjoying better control and positioning.
Things became more challenging for Al Ahli in the second half when Zakaria Hawsawi was sent off in the 68th minute. Despite going down to ten men, the team showed impressive defensive organization and resilience, holding their ground and pushing the match into extra time.
The breakthrough came in the sixth minute of the first extra-time period, when Feras Al Brikan found the net with the decisive goal. From there, Al Ahli managed the game intelligently, protecting their lead until the final whistle.
The trophy ceremony was attended by Saudi Minister of Sport and President of the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, along with AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa. Captain Edouard Mendy lifted the trophy in the presence of Saudi Arabian Football Federation President Yasser Al-Misehal.
Franck Kessié was named the tournament’s Best Player, recognized for his standout performances and key role in the team’s successful campaign, according to the AFC’s official report.
This latest victory highlights the continued success of Al Ahli’s long-term sporting project under German coach Matthias Jaissle and cements the club’s position as one of Asia’s top football powers, while also reflecting the growing strength of Saudi football on the continental stage.
