Al Ahli defeats Johor and reaches AFC Elite semi-finals
Al Ahli has booked its place in the semi-finals of the 2025–26 AFC Champions League Elite with a 2–1 win over Malaysia’s Johor Darul Ta’zim at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah.
The game started at a high tempo, with both sides pushing to take early control. Johor went ahead in the 19th minute when Ali Majrashi accidentally turned a cross into his own net while trying to clear it. Things got even more difficult for Al Ahli when Majrashi was sent off in the 37th minute. Despite being down to ten men, Al Ahli responded strongly and found an equalizer deep into first-half stoppage time, with Franck Kessié heading in from a Galeno cross to make it 1–1 at the break.
After the restart, Al Ahli took charge of the game, and Galeno scored the winner in the 54th minute with a well-taken strike. Even with a numerical disadvantage, the team showed excellent tactical discipline and composure. It stayed organized at the back, limited Johor’s attacking spaces, and looked dangerous on the counter. The players also showed great determination in their duels and positioning, helping the team protect its lead until the final whistle.
Al Ahli will now face Japan’s Vissel Kobe in the semi-finals on Monday, April 20, 2026, as it looks to reach the final and retain its continental title.
